Data from the North Carolina Nutrition and Physical Activity Surveillance System (NC-NPASS) provides data on the weight status (overweight, at risk of overweight, healthy weight, underweight) of children ages 2-18 seen in Public Health sponsored Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and child health clinics, as well as some school-based health centers.

Revisit Your Resolutions

In order to encourage people to pick back up their New Year's resolutions to eat smart and move more, the Physical Activity and Nutrition Branch of NC Division of Public Health has released the Revisit Your Resolutions Campaign for July 2008. The components of this campaign are designed for use in worksites, faith groups, organizations and communities and are free to download and use. The campaign includes: a campaign overview with instructions and ideas, press release, feature article, five weekly newspaper/newsletter articles, food diary, activity log, weight log, three customizable ads/flyers, and the logo.

Save the Date! A Call to Action: Working Together to Solve North Carolina's Obesity Crisis will be held on October 7-8, 2008 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, NC. This obesity conference is being sponsored by the Moses-Cone - Wesley Long Community Health Foundation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation of NC, The Duke Endowment, NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund, Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, and the John Rex Endowment.

County Obesity Profiles Now Available!

NEW! County profiles outlining the obesity burden in each of North Carolina's 100 counties and the steps those counties are taking to combat the problem. These resources were developed to help educate legislators and other decision makers about the obesity problem among their constituents. Each colorful, one-page profile highlights the percent of the county's population that is overweight or obese and the amount of Medicaid dollars spent within each county as a result. Additionally, the profiles describe county-specific consumer patterns and compare health behavior indicators across the state, including fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity levels.

The Burden of Obesity in North Carolina is a set of downloadable PowerPoint slides developed by the NC Division of Public Health to communicate the seriousness of North Carolina's obesity epidemic. This presentation explores the trends, causes, costs, and impact of obesity on adults, children and youth living in the state. The slides include charts and graphs that are easily transferred to other presentations that educate others about the importance of obesity prevention and management efforts.

Announcing the Eat Smart, Move More NC Community Grants Request for Applications

The North Carolina Division of Public Health announces the Request for Applications (RFA) for the Eat Smart, Move More NC Community Grants Program for state fiscal year 08/09. Competitive grant applications will be accepted from local health departments and their community partners to address the nutrition, physical activity, overweight and obesity goals found in Eat Smart, Move More: North Carolina's Plan to Prevent Overweight, Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases.

A new resource is now available for worksites or other organizations that would like to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among its members. The Eat Smart North Carolina: Fruits and Vegetables Challenge is a complete 4 week event that consists of an overview guide, an announcement poster, sign-up sheet, tips sheet, log to keep track of individuals' points, four weekly newsletters, an evaluation form, and a certificate of completion. All of these materials are available for free from this website!

Take Off 4-Health Healthy Lifestyle Camp

Building on the success of their 2007 summer camp, Camp Golden Treasures, the ECU Pediatric Healthy Weight Research and Treatment Center is now partnering with North Carolina 4-H and NC State University to sponsor Take Off 4-Health. Take Off 4-Health is a healthy lifestyle camp for overweight boys and girls ages 12 to 18.

The three-week residential camp will be held from July 27-August 15, 2008 at the Eastern 4-H Center in Columbia, NC. Take Off 4-Health will help campers lose weight, build self esteem and learn the tools necessary to lead a healthy life and reduce their risks of developing chronic disease. Enrollment is limited to 30-60 youth. The cost, which includes all meals, activities and lodging, is $1,950 for the three-week program.
