New tool helps schools track physical activity and nutrition policies

North Carolina schools have a new way to track how they are doing in helping kids to eat better and be more physically active. The Successful Students Scorecard was launched this week to coincide with the start of school. The Scorecard is an online assessment tool to help schools measure their progress toward implementing Local Wellness Policy.

The report emphasizes that while personal responsibility is an important part of the equation, policies and environments that affect access to and costs of healthy foods and places to be physically active remain as obstacles to achieving healthy weights. These tools for clinicians provide guidance on the prevention, assessment and treatment childhood overweight and obesity. They are the result of a collaborative effort among health care professionals, public health professionals, and researchers in North Carolina.

2007 NC-NPASS Data on Childhood Overweight in North Carolina Now Available!

Data from the North Carolina Nutrition and Physical Activity Surveillance System (NC-NPASS) provides data on the weight status (overweight, at risk of overweight, healthy weight, underweight) of children ages 2-18 seen in Public Health sponsored Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and child health clinics, as well as some school-based health centers.

The Burden of Obesity in North Carolina is a set of downloadable PowerPoint slides developed by the NC Division of Public Health to communicate the seriousness of North Carolina's obesity epidemic. This presentation explores the trends, causes, costs, and impact of obesity on adults, children and youth living in the state. The slides include charts and graphs that are easily transferred to other presentations that educate others about the importance of obesity prevention and management efforts.
