Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less
Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less, an online weight management program, is helping individuals across the state achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The 15-week program, offered in weekly one-hour sessions with a live instructor, is based upon proven strategies for weight management. The real-time delivery of the program allows participants to interact with their instructor and other participants while having the convenience of attending sessions from their home or office using a computer. Each lesson informs, empowers and motivates participants to live mindfully as they make choices about eating and physical activity.
The NC State Health Plan for Teachers and State Employees (Plan) offered the Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less program to its members from 2009 until 2017. Both the participation in and results from the program were outstanding. As of June 2017, 729 classes have been completed serving more than 14,500 Plan members with a 63% completion rate (attended 10 of 15 classes). Analysis of 288 online classes between January 2011 and May 2016 found positive outcomes for weight, blood pressure and waist circumference for program completers as well as an increase in their confidence in the ability to eat healthy and be physically active. Most participants reported enrolling in the program to lose weight or better manage a health condition, and program satisfaction topped 90%. A six-month follow-up survey with participants who completed the program indicates that weight loss is maintained after the program ended. Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less continues to serve individuals, private businesses and health plans across North Carolina and the US. More than 2,000 participants have gone through the program through these sources.
